Anyone experience the "Toughbook" laptop?

Morning all!

I was hoping someone might be able to offer some feedback on the Toughbook laptop. I have a really neat task pending late this Spring that's going to take me to the great outdoors for a week to promote and cover a huge dog competition on the web. I want to be able to do live updates from the field, process videos/images, and the likes. However, I'm a bit leary about taking my current laptop outdoors because you just can't control the weather and other environmental considerations.

How are the Toughbooks with the outdoor life? And thank you for your insights.

So while I haven't taken it outdoors yet, I have a business rugged laptop, and it's crazy light.  (and then i realised I hadn't put the battery in it yet)...and then  it was still light... but more like you'd expect from a laptop.

It's pretty sturdy, and unless you plan on trashing through rivers and stuff (maybe during a fox hunt with the dogs?), I think it'll handle it's own ok.  plus they have built in Evdo etc, so no extra card would be needed.

but i think it will handle atmospheric moisture fine, and dog hair and dander.  I'm not sure what other conditions you're expecting.  I'm assuming this isn't in a facility like that used at the Westminster Dog Show.

Thanks, E ...

Thrashing through rivers ... lol! I just might, but if so, I'll have someone meet me on the other side with the laptop. Hair and dander are small considerations. What I'll be doing is recording and sharing working championed retrievers and their handlers at an International "showcasing".  It's an outdoor event - held for five days in a variety of terrain. Water, weeds, wind, rain ... anything else the elements of South Dakota can think to throw my way.

Would be a great test for the Toughbook, but I sure don't want to learn the hard way with a huge dent in my wallet. Think I'll check one out and keep the laptop I have now in the truck as backup, indoor use.  Would be just like me to get excited while taking photos and fall out of a tree. ::: laughs :::

The things we do for love ...

I have yet to see a toughbook up close and personal.  The commercials make it seem pretty tough.  How about a "will it blend" type video promo and call it "will it break" and test the limits of the toughbook?  That would be awesome!

I've heard a lot of good things about the Toughbook.  For me it's a "friend of a friend" situation.  The guy is a contractor and accidently ran over his with no ill effects other than a tire track!

LOL! Wow ... not even I could be this tough on a laptop! This may just be the answer to my stuff "in the field".  Not looking at how "tough" it is, can some that have it tell me if it's a good pc?

I think a few here have used it ... if it's reliable from the PC side, I may just opt this route when I replace my current laptop in the next few months.

Oh, yeah .. water resistant ... something else that'd be a dream.

The toughbook is awesome.  We have had several laptops over the years: different price range and brand names but this one is my favorite by far.  As a family we tend to fight over this one.  The 6 hour battery is a nice feature.  As for testing its toughness...not on your life.  This one we tend to protect.

We, too, have the Toughbook. It is VERY reliable, reasonably quick and efficient, good screen size and resolution. It IS water proof as I can attest to having spilled an entire bowl of cereal with milk all over it about a month ago while it was on. The computer suffered no ill effects at all. Best of all, it is surprisingly lightweight (MUCH lighter than it looks)! So, Keven, if you're looking for something to take into the field, this is your computer!
