On Demand: Choice of the Future?

With all of the technology surrounding us now; HDTV, Blu-Ray, On Demand, Gaming, Mobile Networks and more, on demand definitely fits my lifestyle. I work from home, no one to look over my shoulder or getting odd looks from people around me as I multitask. I am amazed from the time I hit the play button, it was about20 seconds or less until the movie started.

One other unexpected outcome, I have HD sound on my computer. When the movie started, one of my cats started to look around and react to the sound.  They hear all kinds of sounds all day, from a variety of devices, yet do not react.

How many of you have tried on demand and will this trend play a big part in the home entertainment scene.

Actually, I have it ... but I had to get a cable box and hook up for my PC and add it into the house system like a normal tv. This also took a simple tv card installed in the desktop. If you don't need a "box" to access things like the upper level channels and on demand tv, just get a tv card and plug straight in! If you do, see what the expense of yet another box is and make the cost effective decision.

Honestly, I don't find I use my set up for it much at all ...

If any of you are as old as I am..  did you ever imagine how far this would come?

I started on the days of a 300 baud modem and now we're downloading HD movies in a matter of minutes!

:: rolling eyes ::  I have no clue what you are talking about. :D

My first "drive" was a cassette tape deck - TI 99 ring any bells?  And before all the computer games and XBoxes ... and Nintendo came the father of the at home video game: PONG.

Many of us old folks are modern day pioneers. A 300 baud handshake sure seemed fast back then. Some of your oldest friends come from the days of 1200 baud?

And now ... HD. We'll never stop learning and enjoying "better".

Well I am older than dirt, so of course I remember.  From those early day, when unlimited access started with dialups and we were at 56,000 on our modem, there were places to go and people to meet and was the beginning of a new era of online activities.

However, we could not completely take over the Universe as our global friends did not have unlimited access.  It was logical we would move forward and can only imagine what the future will bring to us.

Do you have on-demand on your computer? I'd love that!  I could get work done and still watch the movies I've missed.

How do you get it on the computer?  We just have it on cable - on the TV.

The way I get it is through my Netflix membership - an online video rental site and you pick a plan on how many movies DVD's ypui wanwt a month (they are switching over to Blu-Ray) but still can get DVD and they have on-demand which you do not pay for as part of your membetship and is unlimited.  When Netflix first had this service, you could only use IE but now can use any browser (would have to check) but it will give a msg if not compatible.  There is nothing to download as far as I am aware but would need a broadband connection.  There are a lot of services offering on demand without any membership; iTunes. Amazon (will be starting shortly or has already begun).  The best thing to do is go to iTunes or Amamzon or even do a searcj for on demand programming.  I will find out and post here when I find more information.

I've been mulling on this as I watched tv the past few days and I don't think On Demand is the only option I'd like to see as "the future".

While it's a great feature - there's nothing like scrolling around the channels late at night when you can't sleep and happening up on a jewel you hadn't thought about in years.

So there is someone else like me looking for something and nothing on, so you settle for whatever is available and find something new.  What is interesting there are a lot of movies, television series and other entertainment that are coming out in Blu-Ray as well as On Demand.  When  I was browsing titles the other day, I found some great movies of yesteryear including such classics as West Side Story (aren't you ready to burst into song about now), An American in Paris (fabulous score) and some early Hitch**** thrillers; Dial M for Murder among others.
