Hi Wirgau family- I use Picasa for the easy stuff (cropping, basic fixes) it is freeand easy, but you must remember to export your changed photo if you print from any application other than Picasa. For the more major stuff (our avatar and our LiHD family photo entry) such as moving people's heads from one photo to another, removing distracting backgrounds and stuff), I use Photoshop. It takes a little while to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it is pretty amazing.

In our house, we use several levels of editing software, from the free stuff that came with my camera, to photoshop.  My partner is a genius with photoshop, so I usually get out of editing duties.   I've heard that Gimp is a good one, and it's free, so that might be something to try.

Try a web search for the software names and "special effects" - "add on filters". There's tons of good stuff out there - shareware, freeware - and, of course, high dollar stuff.

I'd also search for what I nwant it to do - cool effects photoshop.  Look for your other software's first - Photoshops have always tended to be the more expensive of them. Special effects fonts is my biggest play search. ;)

Good luck!!

Gimp is a good program but, since it is written for Linux and ported over to Windows, it simply may or may not want to work.  It won't work on my desktop but was fine on my old laptop.  Why?  No clue!

Small helpful hint:
Some programs still have both a resize option and a resample option.  If you find one that has both, use resample.  You will get cleaner re-sizing of your images.

We started out with what was packaged with the camera and it worked pretty well.  Once we got our FZ-18 and -28, then we could shoot RAW and the camera came with Silkypix.  Silkypix worked ok but it was awkward and not intuitive.

Now we use two programs - Nero and Adobe Lightroom.  My wife and I are teachers and found huge educator discounts.  (if you're a parent or student - you can get it too!( http://www.academicsuperstore.com/ )  We saved $200 on Lightroom!

Anyway, Nero is really fast, user friendly, and can correct things like JPEG artifact removal, and hot pixels.  Lightroom is simply amazing.  I love it.

http://tiltshiftmaker.com/  this is really fun to play with too - and it's free!

I'm glad to hear this review on Lightroom. I've been thinking about taking the plunge. Sounds like it's worth it.

Thank you!

That's a very nice editing package made by Adobe.  There are many good books that are dedicated to photo effects written just for Adobe Premiere.  Go to the bookstore or public library and check them out.  There are also tutorials on the Adobe website, but I prefer a book that I can flip through.

I like to use Adobe Lightroom for quick editing and cataloging.  Many of my photos need straightening and cropping to adjust the overall artistic balance.

I do use Adobe Photoshop for my photos but I need something for videos.......I'll have to google it and see what I can find.  I'd go to the library but it's over 30 minutes for me to get to;)  lol

I wish I could say something nice about Roxio Creator ..... but I can't.  It never loaded in our brand new Panasonic laptop and only worked partially in our desktop.  I use ArcSoft Media Converter 3 which will convert AVCHD to MPEG4.  Then I use Nero or Windows Movie Maker.  I haven't done a lot of movie editing yet - but will this winter!
