Connecting my Plasma screen TV to my laptop?

Hey all, this is my first post in this forum and I was not sure where to post this thread, so mods, feel free to move if need be.

So, now that I am comfortable with my new 46" Plasma screen TV I gave been wanting to hook up my laptop to the TV so that I can wtach streaming vides from my laptop on my TV. Problem is, my laptop has no DVI or S-Video output but only a VGA port. Plus my TV has no DVI input, but rather only a HDMI input, and of course all the other stock RCA and Video Component slots. So, is there anyway to utilize my HDTV and hook my laptop to it? Is there a way to go from VGA to HDMi, cause my local Best Buy and Fr's don't seem to have these cables. Help anyone?

You can go from VGA to RCA component output, but I don't think you can go to HDMI without an adapter and a loss of quality. If you google VGA to RCA connector you will find what you need. I was looking to do something similar some time ago, and learned that it either wasn't possible or that it wasn't worth it. So in the end, I ended up just using the PC input on the tv with a VGA cable and a stereo headphone jack cable for the sound. The picture actually turned out great and the sound (once I got the output settings right on my computer) was great. Good luck. Let me know if you find a way that works, I would be interested.

Thanks. I was able to find a VGA to Component cable, and I also purchased a Y-audio cable. I plugged one end of the y-cable into the headphone jack of my laptop, and then into the Red/white audio inputs on the TV. I then set up the VGA cable to the component inputs on my TV, and waited for the magic to happen...except, no magic. Just a black screen. Not even the audio worked. So, I am completely stumped at the moment, and am thinking (hoping) that the problem is with the settings on my laptop.

Did you hit the video out button (F3 on my computer)? It toggles between showing on your tv screen, showing only on video out, and showing on both the laptop and tv. Also, check the resolution out (in the settings menu). I am not sure why the sound wasn't working, unless your tv wasn't the main controller for the sound (do you have it hooked up to the receiver first? Keep us posted.

On my laptop that was F8, and yes I tried that and toggled between outputs and still got no display on my TV. Does anyone even know if the TV is set up to receive this signal from the laptop (I assume that most TV's are in this day and age). As for as sound, the TV is the primary receiver. I do not have a sound system or any other type of receivers set up. The TV speakers are the primary outputs.

This is such a great way of making presentations at work, or watching great movies from Hulu or Netflix.  Very nice! Thanks for the info!

Exactly. Netflix is the main reason why I am attempting this.

Be sure to change your TV input to the Component input. To make sure your laptop output is sending the signal to the TV, you can check your display settings (right-click on desktop, then Properties, or Personalize-Display Settings for Vista).

The answerman has explained to me that there is a way to go from VGA to HDMI. He also said that the converters that allow you to do this are pretty expensive tho. Here's a link he suggested to take a look at  http://sewelldirect.com/articles/vga-to-hdmi.aspx.

You should be able to find one here for under $100 if you want 720 p. For 1080p the converter box is a little less than $200

Hope the answereman was able to help.
