HD camcorder limits in EU cameras

VERY disappointed to try out my new DMC-ZX1 and find out there is a limit to the duration of a video recording.

NOWHERE in any of the sales literature is this mentioned.

Only when I went to record and noticed it seemed to be shorter than available memory was it obvious.

I'm afraid I think this is going BACK to the store.

The store said it's an EU "law". In fact it's a TARIFF and I'd have gladly paid a few pounds more for the camera to be able to record more than 15 minutes.

Most of my video recordings are in the 30-40 minute range and I can't readily gain access to the camera to restart the recording.
I then review and edit to identify the sections of interest.

Anyone else annoyed by this ?

Will Panasonic cover my warranty if I purchase a US version next time I'm on a business trip and get rid of this stupid limit ?

EIther that or it'll be a C***n Powershot :) :)

I think it's a problem with all compact cameras like that.  We're in the states and we have the same problem with all ours including our ZS3, FZ-28, and GH1.  It's not some weird US Tariff thing.  I don't know about other brands however because we only use PanasonicSmile

All our cameras have the same limit to film time except for our Panasonic camcorder  - an HDC-TM20.  You can extend the time by selecting a lower quality video - but who wants to do that!

I believe the reason is that the "regular" cameras have to write directly to the memory card, where our camcorder has a hard drive inside to record the image, and then onto the card if so selected.

I'd bring it back to the store and exchange it for a Panasonic camcorder.

Hope this helps,

Tim
