Hey new LiHD families (and anyone else with 3DHD tvs), Panasonic and DirecTV just launched their first 3DHD channel (103). Give us the scoop! What do you think? How is it to live in 3DHD?

So far, living in 3D (Li3D!) has been amusing! The content is coming slowly, so we'll have to see how and if it takes off. It is Definitely good to see that Panasonic is committed to this technology since they're collaborating with DirecTV to bring this new 3D channel to customers. Other than the 3D demo disc that comes with the BluRay player, and the Coraline and Ice Age 3D movies (which apparently are taking a long time to get to those who submitted the rebate forms, so we were lucky to get our hands on our copies so soon!), the only content that was available until today was ESPN 3D, and they're only showing World Cup matches so far. I do hear that pretty soon there will be some NASCAR (oh joy, watching cars turn left for hours) content, and probably some MLB as well, including the All-Star Game. Picture Quality is simply outstanding, the VT series is getting rave reviews (several review sites calling it the best 2D Plasma they've ever tested), and the quality is no less stellar in 3D. Every time I put the glasses on, I expect the picture to go a bit dark, like what happens in the theater, but the opposite is true, the colors are as vibrant as they are with regular 2D content. Right now, 3D is definitely a Wow-factor, friends and neighbors who have come over to watch the demo disc are duly impressed, so with this additional content coming our way, I'm sure that we'll enjoy our Li3D experience even more! I was just thinking today of how this technology reminded me of when TVs started broadcasting in Stereo. There were only a couple of channels and programs that used this technology (probably similar to color TV and HD TV), and this has the same growth curve. Right now, there are 3 channels available, up from 1, and I am sure by the end of the year, there will be at least half a dozen, and other providers will jump on the bandwagon as well.

Update: I had a chance to watch the first full documentary in 3D on n3D last night, a South Africa Safari, and I have to say it was better than I expected. Was there some ghosting around high-contrast images? Yes. Was the out of focus grass in your face a bit annoying? Yes. But was this a prime example of how great 3D can look in your living room? A resounding Heck Yes! The picture quality is as good as you'd expect from a Discovery Channel HD documentary. Seeing it in 3D is just taking it to the next level. Since you are somewhat restricted by having to wear the 3D glasses, I don't see 3D TV becoming a mainstream activity any time soon. You really have to commit to watching something. Maybe that may change once you get used to walking to the fridge while wearing the 3D glasses. In the meantime though, I am very impressed with the possibilities. I know this is a brand new era of television, I am very happy and grateful that we're getting a chance to be part of it, and I can't wait to see where this will go next.

I love your posts! They have all the insight one could hope for! I recall you making some analogy to Viewmasters and i wondered how many of us went "Yea! Those were cool!" Indeed, 3D is the future and eventually, we will stop calling it 3D but all things change, in the mean time, pleasee keep the updates coming! I'm thoroughly enjoying them, and I know I can't be the only one!

I went to Best Buy before I moved, and checked them out! I love how they had a whole section for them, and you could sit in recliners and watch the movie they had playing in 3D

Cameron, did you have to ask to use the 3D glasses? The Best Buy I went to here in the city didn't have any lying around (probably because people kept stealing them) and I didn't want to ask to use them and have an associate hang around trying to sell me the TV. The 3d TVs did look cool though :)
