I would say a cat... (I'm a cat lover) because they are so cute and easy to take care of.  With a toddler in the house, I'm sure you won't have a lot of time to walk a dog.. I have a three year old and I just can't find the time to do anything else than play with him and do my daily chores

that's true...

I think I've decided to get Emma a pet when she's a little older.  But maybe we'll start off with a cat since they are cuddly but independent

I was thinking about getting my son a fish since he really likes them... I was fish sitting for a friend a couple of months ago..lol

But then I started thinking fishes don't live very long and don't want to explain the whole situation to my son.. so I decide it to wait instead..

If you are going to get a fish, in my experiance Beta Fish are the best---they last a really long time and dont need a huge tank.  Low maintence and very inexpensive, you just have to feed them and change their water .  Fish is definately a good starter pet.  But Knowing Emma, she'd either try to eat it or squeeze it....either way not a good situation lol!

After having both couldn't choose between the two.  We lost Jetty our black lab in 2006 and a day doesn't go by that a fond memory of her in one form or another comes to mind and brings a smile.  Our 2 girls grew up with her and she was their best friend. She was so much a part of who and what we are.  If we went camping, boating, swimming so did Jetty. Now our Jinx (our Ukrainian houseguest) in one short year has wormed his way into our lives and our hearts.  Cats have a character all of their own.  He warms to you if and when he chooses and pretty much gets what he wants.  Dog or cat...you can't go wrong.  They teach us and our children so many wonderful things along the way.  It is unconditional love that never ceases. They bring out the best in all who have the privilege of loving them.

I actually found the cutest little kitten wandering around the school I teach at.  I took it home with me, and was actually going to keep him, until my pessimistic mother came to rain on my parade.  I called her excited to tell her about our newest addition to the family, and she convinced me somehow to take the poor little dear to the animal shelter.  :( Im so sad now, and regretful.  I know I could have given him a good home.... I wanted to take him back, but I now have to wait 2 weeks and MAYBE I'll be able to adopt him.  :( :::sigh::::

nevermind! I called the animal shelter, and they are letting me know as soon as he is ready for adoption (in about 2-3 days!) so excited to pick up my kitty :)))

I've had cats and dogs, I love them both, but my busy lifestyle, and the amount I work, and where I live make cats the ideal pets for me at this time.
