I just happened to catch this on TV the other day, and have this on DVD as well, and I was actually amazed with how well this movie has aged, and is a great addition to anyone's BluRay collection (it became available on BluRay in 2007).
Made in 2001, this completely computer-generated movie may very well have been what set James Cameron on his path to Avatar, since all the actors in this movie were motion captured, and put into fantastic(al) backgrounds. Based on the popular computer game series, Final Fantasy, a lot of viewers were disappointed that the movie didn't really touch upon the games' stories so far. This is good news for non-gamers, however, since the movie by itself is a gem in its production qualities. The story revolves around a scientist, Dr. Aki Ross, who is in charge of finding some mysterious 'spirits' in order to save the earth from an alien invasion. I know this doesn't sound too interesting to a general audience, but the way in which the story is told is more reminiscant of a Gaia quest, someone looking to rebuild natural life.
With action sequences reminiscent of Aliens and Starship Troopers, a voicecast including Alex Baldwin, James Woods, and Donald Sutherland, and a typical Asian story-telling pace, I highly recommend giving this movie a shot. You'll at least be amazed that at nearly a decade old, the CGI in this movie was well ahead of its time.
