We just tried to pull video from the GH1 for the first time and were confronted with a weird file type.  What is an mts file, and is there a way to convert that to something I can use on my pc?

Thanks!

Hi Brad and Jen,

The mts file is from recording in AVCHD format with the camera.  The camera should have come with a disc for HD Writer AE which will comvert it into MPEG2.  Once you've done that conversion, then you can use use many different free programs like Windows Movie Maker, Nero, Arcsoft, etc. to edit and play with the videos.  My experience doing that with free programs is I needed to process the video through a few programs to end up with a finished product that worked.

If however you want to edit them and them burn them into a Blu-Ray format, you'll want a solid video editing program like Roxio or Adobe Elements and the fun really begins!

If you want to avoid some of the hassle, you can record in motion JPEG instead with the GH1 but the files are huge and there is shorter recording time on an SD card in that format.

We put our HD videos here http://www.vimeo.com/user1834772

We shoot them in AVCHD and edit them in Adobe Premiere Elements 8.  We save them in Blu-Ray quality (h264) and Vimeo likes that!

I'm really proud of this one ....... (click Play and then pause it for a bit to let it load for a minute)

Play with HD Writer AE and Windows Movie maker and see what you like.  Be forewarned, editing movies takes a time investment to get the hang of it!

Tim,

Thanks, we didnt even realize there was software with the GH1, I still have the box and will go dig it out!  Really appreciate it.  Beautiful video too man, looks like a fun airshow.

I also didn't realize there was a premier elements video editor, going to go search that out too.

Appreciate it,

Let me know if you can't find the disc.  I'm not using ours anymore and you can have it if you need it.
