The Movie Formerly Known As Avatar, i.e. The Last Airbender... OK, so I had heard horrible things about this, eyes bleeding, hair growing spontaneously out of ears, etc. Which is a real shame because I love the cartoon series, and was really hoping M. Knight Shyamalan would put his last 4 movies behind him and make this work.

Well, the Rottentomatoes rating of The Last Airbender speaks volumes. It's a measly 6. Audience rating is 42. With extremely low expectations (friends of ours had told us it was really heinous), we finally saw this movie last night, and I will give it a solid 5/10. Was it great? Nope. Was the acting wooden and painful? Yup. Did the movie take everything that was fun about the cartoon and stomp it into the ground? Yessirree.

BUT! Overall, it was watchable, the fight scenes were pretty decent and effects were well-done. The sound was excellent, making plenty of use of the soundfield in the 5.1 DTS soundtrack.

I would say it's a Rent. If you've never seen the cartoon (and you should), it won't bother you that they, for some inexplicable reason, change the pronunciation of almost every character, so just turn your mind off and watch it, and then watch the cartoon to see how it's supposed to be.
