This past Tuesday, the movie Watchmen was released on DVD and BlueRay, including the Director's cut. For those of you unfamiliar, Watchmen is the only graphic novel ever to be included in the All TIME 100 novels. The movie version was a 20 year project, which started and stopped many times, an saw various directors come and go as well. In a nutshell, it tells the stories of what superheroes would be if all they were were ordinary humans (all but one) without superpowers in an alternate version of the current world (where presidents can remain in office indefinitely).

The movie was hailed as something rather spectacular, close to the 'comic', but with enough 'Hollywood' in it to become a success. So, the BluRay version is something that's definitely on my list to get if it weren't for the fact that this Director's Cut contains a coupon for an upcoming SuperSpecial release in December, which will contain this version of the DVD, but also an animated side-story which runs through the original graphic novel but was omitted from the movie. People are rather upset about it.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on these special releases, or in general, multiple releases of the same movie. If you're a real fan, do you want them all right away, or do you hold off until the next, improved version is released. Something similar is happening with the Lord of the Rings trilogy right now. The 3 theatrical releases are out in BluRay, but the extended versions, released on DVD a while ago, will be a separate package on BluRay later this year or early next year.

We tend to wait for the improved version. I find it aggrivating when they release different versions at different times of the same movie. Just release it already.

I watched the Director's cut last night via Netflix. I was glad I got to see it again as it looked even more spectacular in BluRay on my TV than it did in theaters. Now I feel like I can wait for the ultimate version to come out in December to see if I will buy it. Multiple versions make me a little nuts. I had 2 different VHS sets of Star Wars (original, remastered THX) and 2 versions of the DVDs...Now I know I'll probably need to change over to Blu-Ray when they come out... I am also waiting to see what versions of Lord of the Rings are going to be out in Blu-Ray...Another case of multiple versions, but they will look spectacular on BluRay!

Lord of the Rings in BluRay is definitely high on my list.   Would also love to see the Hobbit.

I haven't seen it yet ... I guess I'll have to break down. My oldest stepson's a huge LOR fan ... I think I can probably wait til he comes home to visit.

Thanks for the honest opinion, brain!
