using video shot with Panasonic SDR-SW20

Hello! My question is that when I import video shot with my SW20 shot in 16:9 aspect ratio into my video editing program, it comes in as squished 4:3. I believe it's that way for use in making dvds that are then stretched back out on play back to the proper ratio. I want to mix the footage with other footage shot with a Canon Elura 100 that imports as unsquished 16:9. Am I missing something, or is there a program that can stretch the footage out so it matchs my other video? Thanks in advance!
