We really enjoy our toughbook. It is great not to have to worry about it getting dinged, scratched or broken while we are travelling. If we leave it out when the kids are around, we don't worry about what might happen to it. I spilled a bowl of cereal and milk all over the keyboard while it was turned on and the computer had absolutely no problems at all after that. It has all of the power and functionality of any other laptop out there, and is exceptionally light- much lighter than other laptops on the market and much lighter than you would imagine for something so downright sturdy. The only complaint I have is that I would like a larger hard drive (mine has 80gigs), but that's just because I am too lazy to back everything up regularly and we take a lot of High Def video and pictures.

I love my toughbook. I actually wrote a blog post on my page all about my love of this machine. Basically, I like the portability - it is exceptionally lightweight, I love the handle - I really don't need to use a case for it. The thing that I think it is missing is a webcam. I use skype frequently and also like to do impromptu web videos so this missing component is kinda annoying.

I agreee.  Webcam is a must feature for so many different reasons on any laptop.

I don't know if I'd actually call it "lightweight" - the one I have (CF-52) weighs almost 8 pounds (NOT counting the charger/power cord).  I do agree, however, that it's tough - the one that I have  could probably withstand a serious fall without damage.

The keyboard is almost full-size, which is great for my medium-sized hands.  The screen is bright and large, and has a resolution of 1,920x1,200pixels (much larger than both my Dell laptop and my Acer netbook).  Its processing speed seems adequate.  But folks are right that it needs a webcam - even the Acer has that.

Because Panasonic seems to believe that all your devices will be Panasonic ones, the only built-in card reader is for SD or SDHC cards.  That means that you won't be able to read CF, XD, or MemoryStick cards without carrying an additional card reader.  Again, the Acer beats the CF-52, because its reader handles all of these formats.

The likelihood of my carrying this unit around on a vacation is minimal.  For those of us who don't drive everywhere, it would mean a lot of lugging, as well as carrying additional equipment (card-reader, webcam, etc.).  For working at home, however, or on business assignments where I might stand a good chance of damage to a normal laptop, it is great.  And for those with small children, it would be fabulous.

If you're going to be buying a machine to travel with, I'd recommend the Panasonic T8, F8, or W8 - all of which are "business rugged", and all of which weigh between 3 and 3.7 pounds.  And the T8 has a handstrap located on the bottom, which allows you to hold it in one hand and type with the other.

Do you think that the Toughbook is Tough enough for Quadruplets?

Our laptop has just about had it...and I probably will never buy a refurbished....well, I won't name names, but it sounds like "Bell".... again! =)  I use our laptop every day, so I need something that will be reliable, durable, and user friendly! =)

There is some great video floating around out there of a Toughbook being attacked by a tiger. It still worked after the tiger got through with it. Another review I read had the reviewer working to destroy the toughbook. He couldn't do it- even after shooting the screen... I'm pretty sure it could stand up to your 4 boys (though it may be a close race if they're anything like our three!Wink)

We have a Toughbook and we love it!  It's very lightweight and super user friendly.  I bought a 150W power inverter from RadioShack that plugs into a cigarette lighter for long road trips.  Now Evan can enjoy his favorite video games or movies and I don't hear "Are we there yet?!"

It's a great computer, powerful, fast, and reliable.  We love it!
