What is the lifespan of these cards and when should you replace them?

I don't think they wear out. At some point you want to format them in the camera which will scrub them clean. But that's after recording and deleting a lot.

Yea, as far as I know SD cards last a lifetime. I use them all the time especially for camera pics and large documents. I've had one for about three years now and it still works great. Also, Tim great advice about formatting your SD card every once in a while. I remember I did that once before backing up my files and everything got deleted. What a terrible day that was!!

Flash memory does actually have a finite lifespan. All cards have a max number of program erase cycles they can tolerate due to wear, and most consumer SD cards have an expected lifespan somewhere in the 10k to 100k PE cycle range thanks in large part to wear leveling algorithms to spread the wear out more evenly over all sectors. Note that most manufacturers seem to list the life expectancy in terms of insert/removal cycles (with most at 10,000). It'd likely take most people a long time of constant use to hit either of these numbers on a single card tho. Be sure to take care of your cards tho, it's not that hard to damage the pins as I've had family members prove

Luckily SD cards are becoming cheaper and cheaper so even though chances are that the SD card will outlast your camera or camcorder the cost to replace the card is very inexpensive compared to even a few years ago. On the flip side, you don't want to run the risk of looking irreplacable images or video so if you find that a card starts having problems uploading or downloading data you should try to replace the card before running the risk of losing something. There are programs available online for data recovery but they are far from perfect. My suggestion is not to wait until the card starts to get full before downloading the video/images to your computer and always make sure to back up your files. Programs like flickr, picasa web albums, and many more free applications make it easy to do this.

I have experienced a failure with my SD card not too long ago and lost some precious photos. Since then, I have made a habit of using the PC cable to import my video and photo instead of pulling out the SD card and inserting it into my laptop. I believe the memory chip will last a lifetime but the SD card's contacts area will eventually fail from cycling in and out the slots and render the SD card unreadable.

SD cards i believe don't wear out, but the problem with just have your photos in them and not backed up anywhere else is that it can be deleted easier. I went on vacation and my cousin's SD got wiped out accidentally and all his photos were gone. It could have been someone pressing "erase all" or something wrong when inputting it to the computer. Luckily there are programs that can recover these lost photos and they were recovered. I would just back up my photos else wear to avoid this trouble.
