Blu-Ray problem

I had the house to myself and went to watch "Crank 2: High Voltage" and it wouldn't play.  So I thought I had a bum disc but checked and there was a firmware update for our Panasonic DMP-BD80.  I loaded that and the movie still wouldn't play.  I'd get through the credits and then  nothing.

So later in the evening we all sat down to watch "The Invention of Lying" and about 3 minutes into it the dialog cuts out.  Just the dialog.  You could hear other sounds on other tracks but not the dialog.

After a lot of tinkering and head scratching, I went to the Panasonic website and what do you know .... in the FAQ's it says "Some customers are experiencing a problem playing Blu-ray disc title "Crank 2: High Voltage".

This movie title requires that an SD card of 128MB or larger to be inserted into the Blu-ray player prior to inserting the BD disc each time you watch this movie..........."

So I put in a, SDHC card, formated it, and now we're cooking - or so I thought

Now any Blu-ray movie we put in, including ones we've watched before with no problems, don't have the main audio track anymore.  The net result it seems is that while the SD card allows the Crank movie to play, the firmware update now cuts out the main dialog track.

DVD's are now doing the same thing too - no main audio.

grrrrr

Well, I can tell you that I'm now a master of the DMP-BD80 manual and adjustments.  After a few hours of experimenting and trying every conceivable method to get a Blu-Ray or DVD to play the entire audio track I found the solution.   Unplug the machine, and then............ are you ready for this .............. plug it back in!!Laughing

Yep.  I figured a hard reboot might work since I'd tried everything else I could think of!

So now the movies play and all is well.  Crank 2 is still a bit weird in that to get to the play menu you have to go through the previews and hit function, top menu and then play.

This is still happening to us occasionally - with  new Blu-ray releases primarily.  You'll be half way through a movie and you suddenly loose the dialog part of the audio track.  Updated firmware and still the fix is to turn off the machine, unplug it's power, wait a few seconds ........ plug it back in and resume the movie.

We've learned to live with it but I bet there are others that are upset.

Great thread TimnEvan! I hope to do air show photog the way you do - amazing.

As for this topic: I did some testing with my Panasonic Blu Ray too, only I started with the titles Panasonic generously provided. There''s a Pirate in one of these films.

Needless to say, BLU RAY is everything it is cracked up to be. Prior to this I had ignored the marketing since getting one wasn't a major priority or affordable option since I am basically a self supported grad student.

So, when I got into LiHD all that perspective changed.

This weekend I spent time watching a fave DVD from the 1996 film "The Ghost & The Darkness" (Val Kilmer, Michael Douglas). It is basically a true story (based on actual events) that I saw in the theater on release. The Panasonic BLU RAY rendered the image very very well in HD and all the options worked flawlessly, so once I start testing ONLINE only BLU RAY PLAYER gateway content features like WB BD LIve, we'll see how we're really doing.

In addition to all you mentioned I will say these devices are similar to PCs in a sense but they'll eventually out specialize as media equipment, the more computer savvy you are, the more tricks up your sleeve, e.g. the HARD BOOT you mentioned: GENIUS!

A hard boot was a regular IT solution not that long ago! :-)
