So, in this "new" era of Netflix and "clouds" and all things virtual I attempted to hook my 2009 Macbook pro up to my t.v. and receiver (model #'s in the subject line).  On Amazon I purchased a mini plug to HDMI converter which worked--great image but problem number one was that I was limited to three options to select from.  Whomever originally set up my t.v. and system somehow "froze" these features so I can't use the optional "AUX" HDMI port in the front of the t.v., etc.  I tried to de-select the sync mode and that didn't work.  In other words:  HDMI2, HDMI3 and so forth are all grayed out and unavailable.  So that is problem #1.  I ended up pulling out the HDMI port that is used for the system and that one worked but that is not ideal.

Problem #2.  I purchased a cable that plugs into the headphone jack and into the optical port in the back of the receiver (  Digital Optical Audio TosLink to Mini TosLink Cable M/M, 12 FT / 3.7 M, Black ).  I know the sound was transmitting because I checked the preferences on the laptop and it showed an outgoing signal.  I couldn't figure out how to GET TO that audio.  I went through the directions in the manual--turning the dial and selecting and entering OPT 1 but I'm not sure I did all that right.  Seems to me it shouldn't be that complicated.  

Thoughts?  I sent these questions to the answer man so hopefully we'll all know soon.  I love seeing my laptop on the big screen, that was pretty cool and I did get sound from a mini plug to RCA via the AUX in the front panel of the receiver--but I really want the full digi sound that the Toslink will provide.

1. You mentioned Netflix, so I'm not sure if you're trying to stream Netflix movies from your laptop to the TV or if you're trying to play other content as well. Netflix primarily streams in regular stereo sound, even though they did add 5.1 support to Netflix on the PS3.

2. There is a way to re-enable those HMDI ports on your TV, I remember going into the Advanced setup menu when we first set up our VT25 and turning off a port, I also remember that I enabled one of them again.

3. So just making sure that I understand, you are using the TOSLink out from the TV to your receiver? That will also only transmit in stereo, not 5.1
