Okay, tonight is the supermoon, a full moon at the closest in the orbit it passes to earth.  This is the closest in 18 years, so its a super super moon.  No it won't create catastrophic events, but it should appear about 14% larger than normal.  Creating a great opportunity for photos, especially near the horizon.  So anybody that happens to be blessed with clear skys, and snaps a photo be sure to post it here!  Good luck and clear skies! http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/16mar_supermoon/

It was beautiful to see as was the night before.  So cold here that the camera was fogging up.  Definitely brighter but not so sure that it actually looked larger than other full moons.

Well in the evening we had clouds and rain, but this morning it was clear, although I wasn't awake enough to get out my telescope, I was able to grab a couple images.  Nothing spectactular at the horizon, but at least it looks like the moon.

I think this is when we realize the value of NASA and all the initiatives they have to give people facts and reduce superstition and plain illogical thinking.

Thanks for the posts, i was curious who was following this like i was...

I didn't have my LUMIX G1 but I did take one shot with my LUMIX TZ50.

Can't wait to see what NASA has on their blogs.

Thanks for the video link, John. I have to say I was a little disappointed. I didn't remember until late last night and the moon was already overhead. It did appear more detailed than usual but not obviously bigger, probably for the reasons mentioned in the video. I like your photo but was disappointed in mine. I took several with my Lumix digital but I really didn't get any detail, just a bright ball in the night. I'll try and look again tonight.

I agree it was tough, first we had rain, then the clouds broke around 12:30 am, and the moon was high.  But took about 30 frames.  Went to bed, for some reason woke up at 5:30am, and looked out to see clear skies, tried everything I could to get a decent image, took probably 100+ images, what you see were the best, and to be honest a little underwhelming.  Member Kayla shot some this morning, very nice landscapes using the bright moonlight for dramatic lighting.  I will try again tonight as I have figured it out somewhat what worked.  Did get some pretty nice video last night while waiting, outputting it now, and will upload when its ready.

I was actually in Holland this past weekend, and the moon there was also bigger than I can recall ever seeing it while I lived there. I didn't get a chance to take any pictures unfortunately, the weather was perfect for it, cool (low 30s) and clear. Oh well, only 12 more years until the next one!
